The Board of Commissioners of the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) approved a contract at the March board meeting to construct a new addition for the Edgebrook Elementary School, located at 6525 N. Hiawatha in the Forest Glen community on the City’s far northwest side.

Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2011 and the project is scheduled to be complete and ready for students in Fall 2012.  The planning, design and construction of the school addition is being managed by the PBC on behalf of Chicago Public Schools.

The addition will feature nine classrooms in addition to a science lab and a kitchen and dining facility, an increase of 35,494 square feet to the existing building. The project also includes the reconstruction of an existing ball diamond operated by the Chicago Park District on the land adjacent to the school.

“As responsible stewards of the public fund, the PBC implements both environmental and economic sustainability practices in each project we take on,” said Erin Lavin Cabonargi, Executive Director of the PBC.

All projects developed by the PBC are designed to achieve LEED “Silver” Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).  Environmental sustainability features for this project include a partial green and reflective roof, 26 new trees, a rain garden, durable materials, natural light and views, water use reduction measures along with native planting and permeable pavers for stormwater management.

In addition to its commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship, the PBC implements an economic sustainability program that includes bid incentives for the employment of apprentices, and minority and female workers; community hiring and resident workforce requirements, helping to employ those closest at hand; and contract provisions that require minority- and women-owned business participation and local business participation.

A date for community hiring intake will be scheduled in the next few months and will be posted at the construction site.

The Public Building Commission of Chicago manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its sister agencies. Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman. Erin Lavin Cabonargi serves as the Executive Director of the PBC.  Additional information about the PBC and its projects can be found at www.pbcchicago.com.
